Our students absolutely love Edmodo. Because it looks remarkably like Facebook, students enjoy making social and educational connections with their classmates.
Why We Chose the Edmodo Platform
Edmodo is a free, safe, and secure, private social environment developed for educational use.
No ads on student site.
The teacher dashboard gives teachers access to all students and groups registered under his or her name making Edmodo safe to utilize with even the youngest students.
Recently, Edmodo added the option for teachers to monitor and approve or reject any publishing activity on any student's Edmodo page.
Edmodo is private by default (viewable by the teacher and class members only), but may at the teacher's discretion be made semi-private, requiring a quest password to view.
Students are able to read and comment upon their classmate's posts.
Edmodo does not collect any personal information about students or teachers.
The pre-set images and choices included in the platform make it easy and safe for students to create their own profile, including a profile picture.
Edmodo allows for easy media embedding. Simply paste the link to a supported provider (e.g. Vimeo, Youtube, etc.) and the embed code is generated automatically!
Teachers can post assignments, quizzes, polls, and collect grades through Edmodo.
Students can upload and download files through their own account "library," making it easier for younger students to save work on one computer and transfer it to another computer later.
Many other educational groups and sites have partnered with Edmodo to provide teacher lesson plans and links to share with the class.
In addition to giving students the opportunity to write for an audience, the posting format allows student's to increase their online social skills and discussion etiquette.
Challenges Using Edmodo
Since Edmodo does not require student email addresses, in fact does not accept them, students cannot retrieve their password if it is forgotten. They must ask the instructor to reset their password. (Note: Both Dr. Salemi and the media specialist have access to a master username and password list.)
Many students, parents, and teachers may not view Edmodo as an instructional tool. Because it looks and operates so similarly to Facebook, many groups may be wary of its educational impact. Close teacher monitoring of the site is necessary to ensure instructional benefit.
Edmodo is a site that requires extensive teacher supervision. With proper instruction and reinforcement in digital etiquette and expectations, students will benefit from this tool academically.
